As a mom, we’re often busy making sure everyone else in the house is up, dressed, fed and ready to go. I am on a quest to perfect my makeup routine to keep it at 10 minutes or less. I’ve been doing my makeup for 20 years now, and my daily routine hasn’t changed much. But over the years, I’ve gone through trial-and-error with the brands and tools I use to ensure consistency, efficiency and long-lasting results.
This is the look I wear pretty much every day – for work, and when I’m out-and-about on weekends. I don’t always wear makeup on the weekend, and since we starting self-isolating because of COVID-19, I think I’ve put on makeup maybe three times (including the one time I made this video). I do have a much longer routine for special occasions.
Check out my video below to see my routine (no worries, I fast-forward through the actual application, so you’re not sitting there for the full 10 minutes). I’ll also outline my steps and the products I use below.

Using the included sponge, sweep powder across all areas of the face. My face isn’t oily so I find I don’t need to use a primer for every day use and my makeup stays on all day.
Swipe one or two dots on each lid (in the video, I totally forgot to put some on my right lid!), and blend, then add one dot under each eye and blend. I find it is crucial for me to put primer under each eye, otherwise I look like a raccoon by the end of the day due to mascara transferring to my bottom lid.
I like matte eyeshadows for daily use, and I especially like nude colours for a more natural look. This palette is perfect for travel since it’s small and compact.
I spread the colour “Wheat” on my entire lid and up to my brow bone with a broad eyeshadow brush. Then I take a blending brush and add “Desert” to my creases just for a bit of dimension.
I have used so many different brands of eyelash curlers and read a lot of reviews on the Kevin Aucoin curler. I have a long lash bed (is that a thing?) so regular curlers tend to miss my outer lashes and they remain flat. This one catches every single one of my lashes and has lasted so long! I start at the base, then keep pressing as I move towards the tip until I get my desired curl.
My eyelashes are stick straight and they point downwards. I have tried almost every mascara out there (from drug store brands to the more expensive luxe beauty brands). No other mascara keeps my lashes curled than Maybelline. I’m not entirely sure what it is in their formula that works for me, but it keeps my lashes curled through even the hottest days.
I love Kat Von D! Ever since her “L.A Ink” days. Check out our photo together below! I went to her book signing at our downtown Chapters in Vancouver 10 years ago! When she came out with her own makeup line, I knew I would be a fan of that too. I’ve tried so many different kinds of brow products, but KVD’s brow struck powder is one of my favourites. It goes on smoothly and last super long!
Another one of my KVD favourites. This is my go-to liner! Whenever Sephora has their VIB sales I stock up on my ink liner. I usually start at the inner corner, then draw out and fill in.
This is one of the newer products I’m using and I’m hooked. I have a ton of blushes from different brands, but creamy blushes tend to stay on longer (on me, anyway). I tried blending with the attached brush, but I find I can blend it much better and more naturally with my fingers.
This bronzer is also a newer product for me, but I’ve wanted this for a very long time. I like the natural glow it gives and it’s so easy to apply. Using the kabuki brush, I brush it on everywhere.
I’m a bit of a lip-product junkie. I have bags and bins full of lip products and they are all the same nude colour! Buxom is one of my faves though because of that menthol-like tingle.
And voila! My finished product after I quickly straighten my hair with my Chi Hair Straightener.
My goal is to get even faster with my routine, especially before I go back to work from my mat leave. I’m seriously thinking about microblading to speed up the process even more.
I hope this gives you some ideas on how to perfect your own 10 minute makeup routine!
Until next time, stay healthy and safe, my friends!
